Space Rock is a prominent landmark on Kauai’s Kalalau Trail. The location of the rock is the highest elevation on the entire Kalalau Trail (at approximately 700-800 feet) and sits about 3.25 miles from the trailhead at Ke’e Beach. The location is the gateway to the Hono O Na Pali Natural Area Reserve, and many hikers refer to the location as “The Gate.”
Space Rock is a popular break and rest location for Kalalau hikers as there are steep elevation gains to get to the point coming from both sides of the trail.
There is a narrow ledge behind the rock that can be circumnavigated, but extreme caution is urged as a fall would result in a 700-800 foot plunge to the coastline below. A dramatic mountain spire rises behind Space Rock on the other side of the trail.
A Kalalau Trail permit is required to visit Space Rock as it is 1.25 miles past Hanakapiai Beach (the farthest hikers can go on the trail without a permit).
The location is a natural rest stop on the Kalalau Trail. You can climb around Space Rock but it is highly not recommended. A slip and fall would result in certain death.
