Though the North Shore and Poipu beaches get most of the attention on Kauai, there’s a gem of a beach at Moloaa Bay that more than a few people claim is their favorite beach on the entire island.
On most days you will find few people at Moloaa Beach. This is a locals beach where families will often gather on weekends in the shaded areas to the left. Fishermen can often be seen along the shores. The few tourists at the beach are usually from several vacation rental houses in the area.
Due to rocky sections along the beach, and sometimes high surf and tide, Moloaa Beach is better for relaxing and hanging out than it is for swimming. The Moloa’a Bay Ranch Coastal Trail, with excellent bird watching opportunities, starts at the end of the left side of the beach.
There is limited parking near the beach at the end of Moloa’a Road. Unfortunately, there are no lifeguards, public restrooms or showers at the beach.
Moloa’a Beach is also known as Gilligan’s Island Beach to the fans of the campy 1960’s television show. The Gilligan’s Island pilot and first episode were filmed at the beach in November 1963. You can still see the rocky outcroppings on the beach as seen in the intro.
There is limited parking at Moloaa Beach.
After you park, walk past the houses/condos to reach the beach.
Some of the houses are right on the beach, a rare treat on Kauai. You will have a swell time on your vacation if you can rent one of these!
