Gillin’s Beach is a section of Kauai’s Mahaulepu Beach on the island’s south shore near Poipu. Although near Poipu, the beach is secluded due to its inaccessibility. A visit to Gillin’s Beach requires a drive down a bumpy dirt road or a hike on the Mahaulepu Trail.
But don’t let that stop you. This is a beautiful beach with a sliver of golden sand set against a close backdrop of greenery and shade. Hawaiian monk seals are often found at the beach and turtles can often be seen offshore. A single beach house, the Gillin Beach House, is available for rent on the beach. The Makauwahi Cave Reserve, famous for its trove of archaeological artifacts, is nearby.
The waves seem a little more intense than at Poipu, and the beach is best for hanging out, relaxing, and getting some sun (or shade). There is a snorkeling area at the east end of the beach before the bend of Kawailoa Bay. If you’re not liking the crowds at Poipu Beach, or are just looking for a beautiful, secluded stretch of beach that is all your own, seek out Gillin’s Beach and you won’t be sorry.
How To Get to Gillin’s Beach
Gillin’s Beach can be reached via Poipu Road (and other roads) past the Grand Hyatt Kauai. See the link to the map below for complete directions. There are two parking areas, one above the beach and one at the Makauwahi Cave. When in doubt, use the directions to the Makauwahi Cave or Lida’s Field of Dreams. The dirt roads can be bumpy and caution should be urged if using a rental car. Gillin’s Beach can also be reached via a hike on the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail from the Grand Hyatt Kauai. Bring extra water for the hike as the trail is open, sunny and hot.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The roads are on Grove Farm property (owned by Steve Case of AOL fame) and access is provided during the day. A gate on the road is closed and locked promptly at 6PM so be sure you depart the beach in time.
