A 53-year-old woman from Hanamaulu died in waters today (Nov. 13, 2016) off Hanakapiai Beach. Police have identified the woman as Janet Ballesteros.
Emergency responders received a call from park rangers at approximately 11:30 AM. The woman’s unresponsive body was eventually recovered from a sea cave.
Hanakapiai Beach is a beautiful but deadly beach. Strong waves, especially in winter months, have swept many people out to sea. A sign on the Kalalau Trail prior to the beach warns about the many people who have been killed at the beach (photo above). Because of the strong waves and currents, visitors to the beach are warned not to go into the water at any time of the year.
