Kilauea is a small, charming town on the north shore of Kauai that is the gateway to the Kilauea Lighthouse, one of the island’s top attractions. Though the lighthouse gets most of the attention, Kilauea is a delightful town that shouldn’t be overlooked. Some of the island’s best food, art and shopping can be found here.
The Kilauea Stone Building has several nice shops, including Hunter Gatherer, plus the acclaimed Kilauea Fish Market and the ever-popular Kauai Juice Company. Across the street is the historic Kong Lung Market Center with a field-stone building that used to be the Kilauea Sugar Plantation’s company store. The Kong Lung Market Center features a bakery, a bistro and an import trading company offering Japanese tableware, gifts and other goods. And the new Āhuimanu center, adjacent to the stone building, features the North Shore’s first grocery-anchored shopping center in 40 years (Kilauea Market + Cafe). Inspired by Kilauea Town’s historic sugar plantation past, Āhuimanu has a number of shops, restaurants and community resources including Kenji Burger, Kai Bar Coffee Shop, Avalon Gastropub and Hanalei Surf Co.
Also not to be missed in Kilauea is the Anaina Hou Community Park with mini-golf, hiking and biking trails and more! And though Kilauea does not sit on a beach like many popular Kauai locations, the hidden gem Rock Quarry Beach (Kahili Beach) is just down the road! The beautiful Na ‘Aina Kai Botanical Gardens are also nearby.
Whether you’re passing through to the Kilauea Lighthouse or Hanalei, or making Kilauea your destination, Kilauea Town is definitely a place that deserves a closer look.
Please note the Kilauea Lighthouse is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Plan your visit to Kilauea on Tuesday through Saturday to get the most from your visit.
