The late Andy Irons is a beloved figure on Kauai, especially on the North Shore where he grew up and learned how to surf at Pine Trees (aka Waioli Beach at Hanalei Bay). Kevin Ancell, the surfer turned artist, has crafted a wonderful tribute to Irons at Waioli Beach.
Ancell has painted a mural of Irons on the side of the facilities at Waioli Beach, in Ancell’s impressionist style. The thousands of brushstrokes are actually the letters of Andy Irons’ name. The mural was first painted in 2015 and was updated in 2019.
It was originally signed “Kevin Ancell 15” with the phrase “FOR THE IRONS OHANA!! AND KAUAI.” “Ohana” is a Hawaiian term that means extended family. There is also a tree at Waioli with several signs that pay tribute to Irons.
