Why you should do it: Perhaps the most scenic mountain stream trail in Hawaii.
Area: Kokee State Park
Trail Length: 1.8 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Location at Google Maps
The Kawaikoi Stream Trail is a loop trail that starts at the Sugi Grove campsite and follows the Kawaikoi Stream in a beautiful forest setting that includes Japanese sugi pines and oiha trees. The first half of the trail follows the southern side of the stream. The upper portion of the trail makes a loop before returning on the north side of the stream to reconnect with the first section.
The Kawaikoi Stream Trail is located about 3.5 miles down the rough Mohihi Camp-10 Road (which starts above the Kokee Campground). You will need a true 4WD for this trip. The road is steep in some places, is narrow in others, and has sections of fist-sized jagged and loose rocks that can tear up tires and cause flats. There is also a stream (Kawaikoi Stream) that must be crossed (if you’re parking at Sugi Grove) which can be very problematic during wet weather events. Do not attempt this drive in wet weather. The road will be slippery and the stream will be impassable.

A sign at the Sugi Grove campground points the way to the Kawaikoi Stream Trail.
This sign says “ATTENTION! Please brush your shoes before and after a hike. Disease and invasive plant seeds can stick on shoes and gear.” This is good advice for all trails on Kauai.
A portion of the trail has boardwalk like the Alakai Swamp Trail.

Kauai is a veritable Garden of Eden, and this trail proves it.
Though the water is clean and pure, it could contain the harmful bacteria Leptospirosis. Do not drink the water no matter how clean it looks.
