Kauai ATV and Koloa Zipline have opened the first and only bicycle zipline in the United States. The Kauai ZipBike allows participants to ride a bicycle on a zipline 700 feet across water to a platform, then turn around and ride another 700 feet back to the launching platform (just like in the circus).
The Kauai Zip Bike Tour is located on the companies’ beautiful 22,000 acre-property on the island’s southern shore near Koloa Town and Poipu. The 1,400 feet of line is perched 30 feet in the air over the beautiful Waita Reservoir, one of Hawaii’s largest inland bodies of fresh water.
Each person is harnessed in with the bike during the activity. There are three separate lines so that participants can race friends and family members. At the middle platform, a guide repositions the bike for the return. It’s not over after returning to the launching platform. At the Leap of Faith, participants jump off the platform and are lowered to the ground. The jump is assisted by a machine called the True Blue, an auto-belay braking system that lowers participants three stories to the ground.
Kauai ATV and Koloa Zipline owner Olie Rivera got the idea for the bicycle zipline after doing a similar zip bike tour while vacationing in his native Columbia at Villa de Leyva. “Ziplining is exciting, but doing it on a bike is even more of an adrenaline rush,” says Olie. “You don’t have to know how to ride a bike for this tour. The bike is already locked and balanced on the line; all you have to do is pedal.”
Olie’s visit to Columbia was in 2018, and by 2019 construction on the bike zipline was already underway. The zipline was completed in June 2021, just in time to welcome post-pandemic visitors to Kauai.
