Hungry, feral cats can often be seen on the Kalalau Trail begging for food, especially in the rocks and trees above Hanakapiai Beach. Some of the cats are bold enough to approach hikers for food, while other cats stay in the shadows and scavenge for scraps. On a recent visit to the beach in June 2016 we fed two cats half of a deli sandwich from Foodland, and they were still begging for more.
Kauai Kitty Rescue, an organization that cares for Kauai cats, especially those at Hanakapiai Beach, notes that scraps from hikers are the cats’ main food source. The organization provides assistance and resources to those who want to help or rescue the cats. See Kauai Kitty Rescue for more information.
