Cliff Trail Kauai

Cliff Trail Kauai

Why you should do it: Forest hike connects to the Canyon Trail
Area: Waimea Canyon
Trail Length: .08 miles to Halemanu Road, 1.8 miles to Waipoo Falls
Difficulty: Intermediate

The forested Cliff Trail near Waimea Canyon connects the Puu Hinahina Lookout and Halemanu Road, with a connection to the Canyon Trail that leads to Waipoo Falls. There are rare glimpses of portions of the canyon rim from the trail.

The Cliff Trail and the Canyon Trail are often confused. A map at the Kokee Museum (below) clearly shows the locations of the two trails. The confusion often leads hikers to start the journey to Waipoo Falls at the Puu Hinahina Lookout. However, a closer starting point for the Canyon Trail is on Halemanu Road.

The unremarkable Cliff Trail from the lookout is unnecessary for the trek to the falls.

The Puu Hinahina Lookout is the bulge on the road near the Hwy 550 label. Waipoo Falls is in the lower right at the intersection of the Canyon Trail and Kokee Stream.

From the lookout, the trail descends over exposed roots and uneven surfaces through a light forest. If it has rained the trail’s red dirt becomes muddy and slippery.

The sign says Canyon Trail, though maps indicate this part is the Cliff Trail. Nevertheless, whatever the name, the trail leads to Waipoo Falls.
