Brennecke’s Beach, located at the east end of Poipu Beach Park on the island of Kauai, is a popular body boarding and body surfing spot with consistently adequate waves.
The crescent-shaped cove in the South Shore of Kauai has lava rocks for sides, but a sandy, mostly rock-free bottom and beach in the middle. The water is especially gorgeous at Brennecke’s, a unique shade of shimmering light blue that we call Poipu Blue.
How To Get To Brennecke’s Beach
The beach is located right off Hoone Road and is hard to miss. Whether you’re coming from the west or east, just keep taking Hoone Road until you see the beach. There are a few parking spaces that you might be able to use if you get here early enough. It’s not as busy as Poipu Beach, so you might just get lucky.
Facilities At Brennecke’s Beach
There are convenient facilities on the beach. You can find restrooms, picnic tables, outdoor showers, and places to eat close by. If you want to get a picnic table you will need to arrive early. Sometimes the tourists from the popular Poipu Beach will make their way here.
Activities At Brennecke’s Beach
The waves can be strong here, especially in the summer months. The narrow middle section contributes to possible rip currents that can also be strong, so watch out. Know what to do if you are caught in a rip current.
There are lifeguards nearby at Poipu Beach but they cannot directly see Brennecke’s. The rocky coastline on both sides is dangerous, and powerful waves pound against the neighboring shoreline.
Numerous injuries have occurred at Brennecke’s, including neck and spinal injuries, so swimming should be avoided unless you’re a particularly strong swimmer.
Due to the potentially powerful waves at Brennecke’s, the beach is more for experienced body boarders and body surfers. Despite the location next to one of the most popular tourist beaches, Brennecke’s has more of a local surfer crowd and boogie-boarding enthusiasts.
Experienced swimmers find this a suitable snorkeling spot. Chances are you might see sea turtles, fish, and other marine life in the water. Just use fins and other equipemtn to make swimming in the rougher water conditions easier.
Places To Stay Near Brennecke’s Beach
You can find a variety of places to stay in when visiting Kauai, and a lot of them are nearby the beach. There are vacation rentals, cottages, villas and suites. If you’re an avid surfer or really into boogie boarding, it may be worth considering the area for easy access to the beach.
