The majestic Limahuli Garden and Preserve is a botanical garden and nature preserve situated in a 1,000 acre valley on Kauai’s North Shore. The garden is a living classroom where you can learn about ancient Hawaiian plants and culture in a spectacular and natural setting. Approximately 250 varieties of native plants and birds can be found in the valley, about 50 of them are on the verge of extinction and some are only found in Limahuli.
An informational sign at Limahuli Garden explains the Ahupua’a System of resource management used by ancient Hawaiians in the valley.
Ancient Hawaiians lived in harmony with nature in this island valley paradise. There are significant structures throughout the garden and valley, including stone walls and terraces, that attest to an interconnected, sustainable ecosystem used by the Hawaiians. The indigenous people of Hawaii (the Kanaka Maoli) employed the Ahupua’a System of resource management in the valley, a method to live sustainably in the island ecosystem. The system provided the necessary resources to feed, clothe and shelter people in the valley while maintaining the integrity of the island’s natural resources.
Throughout the garden are 41 stations with information about plants, archaeological artifacts and various views. A self-guided tour through the garden takes at least an hour, more if you stop to smell the flowers. A 52-page guidebook comes with the price of the $25 admission that explains each station in detail.
Limahuli Garden is located near the end of Kauai’s highway on your left, just before the Ke’e Beach parking lot.
