Lawai Kai Beach, on Kauai’s southern shore at beautiful Lawai Bay, is one of the island’s most scenic spots. This is the beach at Allerton Garden, the botanical paradise that is a hidden gem of Kauai.
With the Allerton Estate as a backdrop, Lawai Kai might remind you of the old television show Fantasy Island. Beautiful Lawai Stream empties at Lawai Kai, and there is a small footbridge over the stream near the mouth for more dramatic effect. And Kauai’s famous southern sunsets are extra special here.
Unfortunately, access to the beach is hindered because of the garden and adjoining private property. You can see the beach on the regular guided tours of Allerton Garden, but you won’t visit the beach. The Sunset Allerton Estate Tour however does reportedly visit the beach (but check with Allerton to confirm).
Otherwise, access on foot is not possible without crossing private property (not recommended). Walking along the rocky shoreline from the nearby Spouting Horn area would be extremely dangerous and is also not recommended. It is possible to kayak about one mile from Kukui’ula Harbor to Lawai Kai during calm conditions.
If you do make it to the beach, be careful not to disturb the wildlife. Hawaiian sea turtles nest here and endangered shearwater birds have seasonal nests in the cliffs. Hawaiian monk seals can also be found on the beach.
