For a trip off the beaten track in Kauai, try Makaha Ridge Road near Waimea Canyon. The one-lane paved road takes you to the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility at Makaha Ridge. Turn around at the facility and drive back about a quarter mile and you will see a red embankment. Park on the right side of the road and proceed up the embankment for a nice view known as Milolii Vista. (Exercise extreme caution on the embankment as there is no guard rail and loose gravel could send you sliding into the canyon.)
We’ve seen some concern about the road and whether you need four wheel drive. Aside from the fact that Makaha Ridge Road is only one lane, the road steepness and condition is comparable to the road that leads to Waimea Canyon. So if you’ve made it to Waimea Canyon, this road should be no problem. Watch out for oncoming cars on the narrow road.
The drive is mostly forested and the area is used by hunters and 4WD enthusiasts. Located a short distance from the road is a fire control observation tower.
The road is not marked. Click on the map link below to see the location in proximity to Waimea Canyon.
